Dear morning people, night people, & afternooners,
Mornings have been hoodie optional up until this AM. It’s not even that cold, just the changing of the season. Pen freeze has struck again—OK, let’s do this.
We played with Kid Congo and The Pink Monkey Birds & Thimastr last night—fun times. We didn’t play consistently and even crashed our first song, which made my hair turn white. Jumped intro, flipped chords, mangled lyrics. Jones, you’re on a performance improvement plan (PIP). Thimastr is a special band, I really dug their harmonies, atmosphere, grooves—like a Flying Nun band who listens to Remain In Light and Ronnie Spector a lot? “Sounds like” shorthand is annoying but throws a dart. I bought their new cassette, on High Dive Records, which isn’t technically out yet.
Kid Congo played a long set, which was lucky for us, and he is one of the coolest guys you could hope to meet. Played my fave Gun Club tune, “My Dreams.” Mark Cisneros’s Mosrite chording and blend with Kid Congo was super creative, I really dug it. I bought a couple of 7”s I don’t have, and CDs of a couple other records.

I listened to one of my Bandcamp finds yesterday, Kim Salmon and The Surrealists Ya Gotta Let Me Get My Ya-Yas Out. It’s the first of that lineup that I’ve explored, mixed by Jim Dickinson, and at first listen would situate well with Tav Falco and early 80’s Alex Chilton. Casual, primitive grooves. Sits well with Kid Congo music, too.
