8.29.25 - WHATEVER HAPPENED TO JUMPING ROPE?

KCMO

Dear doom scrollers, prayer warriors and total space-outs,

Sometimes you just wake up an hour early, no good reason, but it happens.  Last night we were lucky enough to take a tour of the Nelson Atkins art gallery’s basement level, where about 3% of their collection is stored.  We saw the shipping department (serious business) and learned about handling and fixturing and photographing and storing and staging art.  Perfect temperature control down there, highly secure, no photos allowed. So cool.

It is almost the three-day weekend, time to finish the shed assembly and other things.  I finished Andrey Kurkov’s Diary Of An Invasion and I’m hanging out in that liminal space where I haven’t picked out a new book to read.  Rollins’ Stay Fanatic!!! Volume 2 is calling.  I have not read the latest James Lee Burke, or a couple of Joe Lansdale books I bought this summer.

I ran into a friendly 77 year-old guy at the brush drop-off last weekend who told me to read a nutrition book called Fast, Feast and Repeat.  This was after we got into a conversation about staying active, and he talked about being in recovery from alcohol.  He was a cool guy and said “you helped make it” when I wished him a good day.  He was in fine form at 77, and like me, a sugar freak.  “A box of donuts won’t survive overnight at my house.”

This last ink cartridge is hit and miss--pretty old.  I bought a big multi-color pack a couple years back.  It needs anti-coagulant.

I listened to a Munster Records comp and a White Flag comp called Thru The Trash Darkly on Bandcamp this week.  White Flag has a lot of distinct sounds and eras.  The pop punk is ok but the other vibes I love--garage and jangle and trashy rock.  Munster Records is awesome. One could justify buying a lot of records from their site to maximize shipping from Spain. That would be the right thing to do.

Questions:

  1. Whatever happened to jumping rope, like Rocky Balboa, as exercise?

  2. Isn’t government investment and influence at Intel kind of a socialist-ish development?

  3. Why don’t I make calzones more often?  I used to make really good calzones.
